Can You Re-Buy Anytime

“Can you re-buy anytime?” is one of the most common beginner questions, and the honest answer is: it depends on the format, and even then, never in the middle of a hand. Cash games are flexible, tournaments are strict, and one iron rule — table stakes — applies to both. Once you learn the difference, you will always know when it is legal to reach for your wallet.

The one rule that never bends: table stakes

Whatever the game, you can only add chips between hands, never during one. This is the table-stakes rule: each hand is played with the chips you had in front of you when the cards were dealt. You cannot pull cash out of your pocket mid-hand to call a big bet, and you cannot add chips because you like your holding.

Cash games: almost anytime (between hands)

In a cash game, the answer is close to “yes.” You can add chips — usually called a top-up or rebuy — whenever a hand is not in progress, up to the table maximum. If you double up and want to keep only the table max on the felt, that is your choice; if you get short, you can top back up to the max between hands.

There are a few limits:

• You can only add up to the table’s buy-in maximum. If the max is $300 and you have $250, you can add $50, not $500.
• You add between hands, then the dealer confirms the new amount before dealing.
• You cannot take chips off the table and then rebuy just to reset — most rooms restrict how soon you can rebuy after cashing part of your stack.

For practical purposes, in a cash game you effectively can rebuy anytime you are not in a hand.

Tournaments: only during the rebuy period

Tournaments are where “anytime” breaks down. Most tournaments fall into one of three types:

• Freezeout: no rebuys at all. Once your chips are gone, you are out. The stack you start with is all you get.
• Rebuy tournament: you may buy more chips, but only during the rebuy period — typically the first hour or the first few blind levels. During that window, if you bust or fall below the starting stack, you can rebuy. Once the period ends, it becomes a freezeout.
• Re-entry tournament: you cannot add to your current stack, but if you bust during the re-entry window you can pay a fresh buy-in and enter again as a new player with a new stack.

A worked example

You enter a $100 rebuy tournament. The rebuy period is the first two hours. You start with 10,000 chips.

• Level 2 (35 minutes in): you get coolered and drop to 800 chips. Because you are inside the rebuy period and below the starting stack, you slide the floor another $100 and get topped back up to 10,000. Legal.
• End of Level 4 (two hours in): the rebuy period closes. The floor announces a one-time add-on: pay $100 for 10,000 more chips. You take it, jumping to 22,000. Legal.
• Level 6: you bust. You want to rebuy again — but the period is over. Not allowed. The tournament is now a freezeout for everyone. You are eliminated.

Notice the timing was everything. The same $100 that bought you back in at Level 2 does nothing at Level 6.

Quick reference and common mistakes

Common mistakes to avoid:

• Trying to add chips mid-hand. Never allowed. Wait for the hand to finish.
• Assuming every tournament allows rebuys. Freezeouts do not. Read the structure sheet first.
• Missing the rebuy-period deadline. Once it closes, your stack has to last — plan accordingly and consider the add-on.
• Confusing rebuy with re-entry. A rebuy tops up your live stack; a re-entry is a brand-new entry after busting.

Quick reference:

• Rebuy tournament: add chips only during the rebuy period; take the add-on if offered.
