Read the seat. You're given a position — under the gun through the small blind.

Position sets the width
The single biggest driver of a preflop range is your seat. Early position plays tight because many players can still act behind you; late position plays wide because you'll usually have position after the flop and fewer opponents to get through. Here's a standard button opening range for reference:
Notice how far down the button range reaches — small suited aces, suited connectors, and plenty of offsuit broadways — compared with the tight, high-card-heavy range you'd open under the gun.
How to build ranges that hold up
Favour suited hands over their offsuit counterparts (they make more flushes and straights and play better postflop), keep pairs for their set-mining value, and add offsuit hands cautiously from late position only. Frequently asked questions
What is a preflop range?
A range is the whole set of hands you'd play a given way from a given seat — for example, every hand you'd raise first-in from the button. Good players think in ranges, not single hands, because you're dealt each spot over and over and want a consistent, profitable set.
Why does position change the range?
The later you act, the more hands you can profitably open, because fewer players are left to wake up with a big hand and you'll have position after the flop. That's why a button opening range (~45% of hands) is far wider than an under-the-gun range (~15%).
Are these exact GTO solver outputs?
No — they're standard, widely-taught reference ranges ("GTO-based"), not a solve of one specific table and stack depth. They're ideal for learning the shapes; a real solver would tweak them for exact conditions.
How is my score calculated?
It's the overlap between your selection and the reference range: correct picks divided by everything either of you included. The grid then colours your hits, the hands you missed, and the extra hands you added.
